Beauty and Tranquility
Nestled in the highlands of Guatemala at 1600m(5200') is Lake Atitlan, long considered by discriminating travelers to be among the most physically beautiful lakes on the planet. Three volcanos tower over this 1220' (340m) deep lake (Jaques Cousteau says!), the tallest being 11,600'(3515m) and are one of the reasons that Aldous Huxley described the lake as "really too much of a good thing".
The lake is approximately 12 miles long and up to 7.5 miles wide. At this elevation, the weather is perfect year round, with daytime high temperatures of approx 75(24C) and nighttime lows of 60(16). That's why this is known as the land of eternal spring.
San Pedro la Laguna is one of 17 municipal districts on the lake, all of which are traditional Mayan communities, each with it's own character and unique traditional clothing. San Pedro has a wonderful combination of traditional Mayan lifestyle(like a living museum) and modern conveniences such as a variety of restaurants with international cuisine, good night life and ATM's to replenish your "funtickets". Lot's of interesting, inexpensive and healthy activities are available as well. For the more adventurous traveler, hiking/climbing the volcanos or the "Indians Nose" is very popular, as well as kayaking, horseback riding, mountain biking and even a zipline or tandem
paragliding for the thrillseekers. Much of Guatemala's famous coffee is grown right here and coffee tours are available. It is an area of learning as well and one of the best places in the world to study Spanish(price and setting make it so). One can also take back loom weaving or beadwork classes, learn more about the famous Mayan calendar, or study Mayan culture, plants and medicinal herbs from local shamans. Lots more activities are easy and affordable here, all making Lake Atitlan a holiday to remember. Bring your camera!"
